Big Project planning
Student’s learn how to plan ahead for projects or large assignments with the tutor’s expert guidance. Many students find projects more challenging because they haven’t learned how to chunk it out into more manageable pieces. We come alongside to teach these skills to help not only get the work done but also reduce their stress about the assignments.
-
Study skills
Included topics are how to take proper notes, appropriate prioritization, focus, task initiation, studying for tests and effective management of all the parts that lead to success. We use the MindPrint assessment report to guide effective strategies based on the student’s unique learning preferences. Common hurdles are task initiation, procrastination, distraction and low motivation.
-
Time Management
We work with students to develop effective systems for managing homework assignments. These include: estimating how long an assignment may take, using a calendar or schedule to create traction with homework, creating an effective study space, estimating how long the work may take, prioritizing work for effective management overall and of course actually turning in the work on time! We focus on helping the student develop an overall awareness of deadlines, pacing needs, distraction management and focus.
-
Organization
Students learn how to utilize all the tools available to keep track of materials. We also focus on designing a systems students can follow using new tools including (but not limited to) colored binders, folders, notebooks, calendars, clean work space, colored pens and pencils. It is common for us to do a back pack dump to make a clean start with papers to turn in, trash or complete.
-
Planner Use
We help students learn new systems related to tracking their chores, sports practices, games, clubs or youth group details. Many prefer a digital calendar over a more “old school” paper planner. Use of a paper planner or calendar system allows for regular check in’s and suggestions to increase productivity and overall management the student can follow.
-
Homework Checklist
Student’s come away with new systems to keep track of deadlines, working with missing assignments, communication with teacher and more engagement with their learning. This includes mastering focus, time management, creating a study space and pacing.
